Saving the World, One Sheltie At A Time

Success Stories

Most of the Shelties featured on our site have gone on to bigger and better things! We love to share the success stories of these amazing dogs. If you want to share your story, send us e-mail. We would love to hear from you! Here are the stories of just a few of the dogs we've rescued.

If you need to relinquish a Sheltie for any reason at all, please send email to our relinquishment office.

84) Shelby is an absolutely marvelous, sweet, bright girl who belonged to somebody who gave her to somebody else who gave her to somebody else who had released another Sheltie to us previously. (Poor Shelby...just being passed from home to home!) Her last owner realized that she was too busy and turned Shelby over to Sheltie Rescue of Utah.

Shelby, a rich mahogony sable, was about 6 years old in early 2007, in excellent health (but needed to lose a little weight — who doesn't?). She was eager to bond with a forever family, had no problem with men or women, and she was very good with kids and other dogs.

It didn't take long for that perfect, forever home for Shelby to appear. She is now being loved just the way a wonderful Sheltie girl should be. We've even had the pleasure of puppy-sitting Shelby here at "Camp Sheltie"!

Jackie O.85) Jackie O. was a very small, 3 year old (when she came to us in early 2007) Sheltie-girl who had been required to live outside for all three years of her young life. She's an adorable tri-color Sheltie, became potty trained very quickly, and is bright, friendly, loves to play, LOVES to cuddle, and would also love to share any food you're eating (don't let her!). Her owner turned her over to Sheltie Rescue because they really had no interest in her (unbelievable, but true). Now, Jacki-O is discovering life indoors with people who love to cuddle back, talk to her, scratch her ears, and snuggle in bed, and she's loving it all!

It took no time at all for a wonderful couple from northern California to contact us to ask if we'd consider letting them drive to Utah to meet Jackie. As it happened, we were going to be in Oregon very shortly after that, so we asked them to meet us in Oregon, loaded Jackie up into the car, and drive west. This lovely couple met us in Oregon as planned, feel instantly and deeply in love with Jackie — who returned the emotions completely — and adopted her on the spot. Sigh...another lovely success story!!

Max as a puppy86) Max is a 4½ year old (in very early 2007), very healthy, purebred tri-color Sheltie. After his family moved to a smaller house and had a baby, they realized that Max wasn't getting the attention that he was used to having and needed. Max loves the family's new daughter, but isn't as gentle as she needed him to be, so she ran from him...and of course this herding dog was quite happy to herd her around.

Max's sweet face caught the attention of an Episcopal minister in St. George, UT, who is engaged to be married to a gentleman who previously adopted another Sheltie, Bisou, from us. Max is very happily settled in with his new Mom and has become very close friends with his future Sheltie-sister — both of whom are always allowed indoors...and on the furniture! Once more, a grand happy ending!!

Indy87) Indy came to us with his sister Gracie. They were given up because the family's situation changed and they could no longer give these lovely dogs the time and attention they would like to.

Indy was a five year old (in mid-2007) sable-and-white Sheltie. He has an incredible temperament, is wonderfully loving, is in great health, and gives us tremendous love, devotion, and joy. Indy is a great cuddler and just loves to be loved. We fell completely in love with this wonderful Sheltie boy and really, really wanted to adopt him ourselves! Unfortunately, our house is filled with our own Shelties and many rescue Shelties. So, to be fair to Indy, we knew that we had to help him find his forever home.

Indy has been adopted by a wonderful couple who showed themselves to be the kind of people we knew would help Indy thrive. This lovely little boy quickly settled into his new home and is as happy as can be. We love these happy endings!

Sheldon88) Sheldon was, when he came to SRU, a very sweet, two year old "velcro" Sheltie who is fairly soft in personality. He arrived here from Wyoming. Sheldon just wanted to be petted, be loved, and not be frightened. He fiound fast movements and loud noises a little disturbing. He's a bit timid about some things, but loves to be close and affectionate with his family members. Sheldon bonded more quickly with women and girls than with men and boys, but with gentleness and patience demonstrated that he would bond very nicely to anyone.

Sheldon was adopted along with his new Sheltie-sister Rebel, by an active senior gentleman who has exactly the sort of calm, peaceful demeanor that Sheldon needs in his life.

Rebel89) Rebel was a small, 16 pound, tri-color Sheltie who was only nine months old (July 2007). She was a bit timid at first, staying mostly to herself in her first few days with us, but clearly wanting to bond and be loved. After a few days, we realized that Rebel will start to stay near her person and take a closer look at who he or she is and what's going on. She is a very feminine Sheltie with the more typical reserved Sheltie personality. She had been an indoor dog for only two months – before that she was left in a yard...but you'd hardly know that by how sweet she is and how good she is around the house.

Rebel is very smart and really wants to please. She was turned over to Sheltie Rescue because the person who rescued her from being a backyard Sheltie could not keep her, although they did spend a lot of time training and working with her. This darling girl was adopted, along with her new Sheltie-brother Sheldon, by a lovely gentleman whom we've known for several years. This long-time Sheltie owner will provide exactly the kind of love, affection, understand, and calm that Rebel needs.

Pearl90) Pearl belonged to a former Sheltie breeder who lives in a nearby state. The breeder is a senior who had an accident that left her unable to give her Shelties the standard of care that she wanted to give them. After trying for a year to regain that ability, she was injured again and faced several months in hospital and physical therapy. To ensure that her beloved dogs would be given the best care they could get, she contacted Sheltie Rescue.

Along with several other Shelties, Pearl arrived at Sheltie Rescue of Utah scared and in less than excellent physical condition. Pearl was only 4 and a half years old in October 2006, has a very sweet disposition, and only wanted forher life to settle down as soon as possible.

Pearl was spayed, brought up to date on vaccines, microchipped, and given a dental (in which she had 16 teeth extracted – poor girl!). Pearl was adopted by her foster mom and dad, who are are very enthusiastic Sheltie Rescue of Utah supporters – and who are still willing to foster additional Shelties for us. Pearl is one lucky little girl!

91) Stevie Nicks is an 18 month old, over-sized Sheltie-girl with a wonderful, wonderful temperament. Stevie gets along with people of all ages, other dogs (even grumpy dogs), and cats. She can persuade another, asocial, dog that they have nothing to fear from her and even entice them into playing with her. She can work it!

Stevie easily tolerates youngsters (the 4-legged kind) that jump on her and pull at her coat, without getting upset or angry. She's very patient, loving, and confident. She would be an ideal Sheltie-girl for therapy work. Stevie would benefit greatly from a formal dog training class...she's still a bouncy teenager and has a habit of jumping up on people she loves, which is just a lack of training and education. Because she's a large girl, this is a habit to be discouraged. Stevie loves to cuddle with her people and is a great snuggler at bedtime!

Stevie has found the perfect home with a fantastic couple who will give her the love and training that she needs. This match was obviously this little girl's destiny, 'cause her new dad's favorite singer is...you guessed it...Stevie Nicks (of Fleetwood Mac).
