Patch is an 8 year young very sweet Sheltie boy. He has the typical little Sheltie boy temperament although, because of his previous environment, he is tentative, very shy, and afraid of people and dogs. Patch does not play with other dogs here even when they invite him to play. He is afraid when they approach him and warns them off. What Patch really wants is to lay next to you and be petted, but he's very shy about that.
Patch was born and raised in a very harsh environment and spent a large percentage of his prior life in a small crate. He was used for breeding purposes.
When Patch arrived at Sheltie Rescue of Utah he was extremely underweight at 12lbs and very dehydrated. We were told he was purposely being starved. Patch should weigh in at 18 to 20lbs. His breath was horrible indicating very bad infection in his teeth and gums. We later learned that the dental infection and even gone up into his nasal cavity. He was not far from having an abscess going clear through his cheek.
To our amazement when we did a comprehensive blood panel and urinalysis, which should be part of every dog's annual veterinary care, all his diagnostics came back looking good. Completely unexpected given the awful condition he was in.
We went forward with the extensive dental he needed and of course, neutering him also. The neuter will also reduce the likelihood of prostate cancer.
Patch is currently on a high quality diet with three meals a day to help him rebuild muscle tissue and make healthy weight gains to get him back to a normal, healthy size.
Patch is house trained. But, because of the environment he came from and because he was just recently neutered he will still, at times, lift his leg and mark. To give him the run of the house and help him learn to live in our home like a normal, healthy, happy Sheltie boy, he wears a belly band which is a male diaper.
Patch needs a quiet adult home with lots of love and a good dose of patience to help him continue to gain confidence and blossom into a really happy Sheltie boy.
