Many might wonder what a dog like Bubba, a black Lab mix, is doing here at Sheltie Rescue. And that would be a good question. Each week and sometimes more often I get a list of the cats and dogs that are going to be euthanized at one of our local shelters. It's an awful thing to see these precious dogs and cats...some just puppies and kittens, some are seniors that deserve a more loving retirement than euthanasia, and know that you really don't have the resources to save all of their lives. An appeal is sent out to all the rescue groups in the area to save these wonderful creatures. Some dogs and cats are lucky and get rescued. One week, I noticed that one dog on the list had been at the shelter for maybe a month or longer. This was very unusual so I suspected that the good people at the shelter were trying very hard to save this dog. Unfortuantely, he hadn't been adopted and his time was up, that Monday. We called and with help from the shelter and rescue volunteers who don't even work with Sheltie Rescue, Bubba was pulled out and saved.
Now Bubba is a very friendly Lab mix who seems to love people and playing with other dogs and he loves his toys. In the video you'll see he goes straight for the toy box and can hardly decide which toy he wants to play with next! You'll also see him give kisses to a woman who he's never met before and how happy he is to meet her.
Bubba may be best in a single dog household because he's quite active...at least until he's settled in and has his basic training skills down. To do this, you'll have to take him to a training class. Bubba may show some jealousy over his toys if there's another dog in the household or visiting. This is a training issue. He is a perfect gentleman when it comes to letting me or anyone else take his toy away.
Bubba would make a great hiking companion (don't forget to watch the outside temperature and his body temperature and cool him off...a black coated dog and heat don't mix well.) Bubba has the makings of an excellent Search and Rescue dog, too.
But in order to be a good household citizen Bubba will need to learn some manners...meaning, he just needs his basic training. In the video below you'll see that Bubba can get up onto just about any surface in the room, would certainly clean any food off of kitchen counters, but will also certainly be a devoted and loyal companion to the right adopter. Heaven knows what he'd do if he could get to the kitchen garbage when nobody's around!
If you adopted Bubba and took him to training classes you'd have one amazing dog. This is a smart, sweet, loving boy. One of Bubba's angels took him to Camp Bow Wow to see if he could be certified as being good with other dogs. In one of the photos you'll see the certificate that Bubba got. (I don't know why it isn't signed!) He has a second certificate too, from Dog Mode, certifying that he plays well with others. You are welcome to talk to these people directly about him.
I have transported Bubba in my car where, for a youngster, he was quite well behaved. He wasn't foaming at the mouth or flying around. He sat in the front passenger seat most of the time, after exploring the back seat of the vehicle. When I needed him to move so I could shift gears, I was able to get him to move without too much trouble...he was very responsive to what I wanted. For an untrained kid, he behaved beautifully and traveled well.
If you'd like more information about Bubba or to adopt him please call Barbara at Sheltie Rescue, 801-942-4762. Bubba's adoption fee will be $125.00. This wonderful boy is really worth a pot of gold!
